Starting Position

2 attackers and 1 defender in each section, the ball begins in one of the end sections.

The team in possession should look to pass the ball through the sections from one end of the grid to the other, without the defenders dispossessing them.

The attackers should look to pass the ball forward as soon as the opportunity arises and not just retain possession within their own section. In order for a forward passing opportunity to occur the players in the next grid must ensure they create space for themselves and offer the correct supporting positions.

  • They should spread out as high and wide as possible by ‘threatening the back of their defender’ or by ‘checking out’. These movements then create space in front of the attacker to move into.
  • They can even cross over and exploit the space vacated by the other attacker.

All the passes between players, regardless of whether they are in the same grid or across grids, should be;

  • Accurate: To ensure possession is retained and that players do not have to adjust their positioning,
  • Correctly weighted and along the floor if possible: To ensure that the receiving player has no problems controlling it.
  • Played at the correct time: To minimise the impact the defender can have on the receiving player.
  • Played to the receiver’s strong side: To ensure the receiving player is comfortable.

Once the ball has reached each end of the grid, it should be passed back towards the end other end, so that a cycle continues.

Defenders and the attackers in each grid should be rotated regularly.
