Running with the Ball

Starting Position

A 3 v 1 situation is set up in one end zone, and the final 3 players stand in the opposite end zone. Ball begins with one of the attackers in the 3 v 1 grid.

The team in possession must complete a pre-determined number of passes before they are allowed to break out of their zone. In order to achieve these passes the individuals should effectively support the man in possession, by adopting the appropriate positions depending on where the ball is, the defenders positioning and where there is available space. Once the required number of passes have occurred the ball can be run out of the area towards the far zone, where the other 3 players are waiting. The player running with the ball should look to cover the ground of the middle zone as quickly as possible and with the correct technique.

As they enter the final zone, they pass the ball into the feet of one of players already in there. They then become the defender and another 3 v 1 situation arises.

For younger players a larger area to pass in or a smaller number of passes may serve to encourage the running aspect.
