Key Factors for this Football Session

  3. Quality of Pass; Accuracy, Weight, Height and Timing
  4. Communication
Starting Position

Two lines of players begin at one end of the course, while two servers start at the opposite end. The first person in one of the queues has a ball, as well as the two servers.

The first player with the ball passes to the player alongside them (the first person in the adjacent queue) before moving towards the cone in front of them. Once at the cone they cut across towards the server opposite them. The server plays or throws the ball to this player who returns the ball as directed by the coach. They then go around the server and back to the start, arriving at the back of the cue on the opposite side.

Once the initial pass has been played, the receiving player then passes back to player now at front of the other line before they mirror the path taken by the 1st player (but moving towards the other server), this pass and move cycle continues for every player.

The movements the players undertake between starting line and first cone can include: Jog, skip, side step, crossovers, hopping, sprint, high knees, open/closing groins, fast feet, lunges and jumps.

The technique they use to return to the server can include:

Head, chest and pass, thigh and pass, volley, pass or control and pass.

Each server can have a different service and return technique, as player’s will experience both sides during this exercise.

Adaptations that can be made to this session include:

  • Longer distances between cones (increased movement time)
  • Greater distance between teams (increased passing distance)
  • One touch passing between teams
  • Servers alternate after each throw (the person returning the serve becomes the server, freeing up the server to join the exercise)

If not regularly alternating the servers, during the exercise ensure to change them after a given time limit. Unless this warm up is being used prior to a match and then it can be the substitutes or uninvolved players that are used as the servers.
