Fitness and movement are two of the most important weapons in a referee’s arsenal when controlling a match. The accuracy of a referee’s decision is based on their proximity to the play. If they are too far away from the play and get a decision wrong then they are scrutinised by many and deemed incapable of completing their job. It is with this in mind that a referee must be physically prepared for the match.
As modern approaches and technology have led to advances in the fitness levels of the player’s, the referees fitness regimes has also evolved. Long gone are the days when the fitness routine would consist of hours of non productive jogging around a pitch, instead training plans are now tailored to the modern game, where speed and strength are key.
