Detailed Analysis

A broken ankle can be the result of an awkward fall, twist or a direct blow to the region. For these reasons it is not an uncommon injury in football. The ankle consists of 3 bones and it is possible to break any of them. Once a break occurs there may also be some ligament damage. However, a severely sprained ankle can mask the symptoms of a broken one, so all ankle injuries that demonstrate the following symptoms should be referred to further medical testing;

  • Immediate and severe pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Tender to the touch
  • Inability to put any weight on the injured foot
  • Deformity, particularly if there is a dislocation as well as a fracture

Rehabilitation can begin once the cast is removed (up to six weeks), and may take months until the ankle has recovered enough to participate again. Exercises included within the rehabilitation programme include;

  • Range of motion
    • Calf stretches
      • Front leg straight, back leg bent
      • Both legs bent
    • Point toes towards body*
    • Point toes away from body*
    • Roll ankle in each direction*

Stand on one foot and balance for 20 sec's, building up to be able to do it without holding on and with eyes closed * Add resistance when possible.

  • Strengthening
    • Heel Raises
    • Step-Up
    • Calf Raises
