Warm Up


Understanding the requirement for a detailed and thorough warm up is crucial for any football coach. As without this understanding they will not be able to plan a sufficient one for their player's to complete. In order to assist coaches in gaining this understanding the following articles have been compiled;

Match Day Warm Up : A Position Specific Approach: In order to guarantee that each player is appropriately prepared the activities that are included within their warm up should revolve around the position they play and the common physical and ball related activities they must undertake. Read On

Sessions & General Ball Work

1-2 with Outside : Player's inside the area perform wall passes with those on the outside. The surface they use can be varied to focus on different techniques.

2 Lines Passing : Exercise to prepare player's for passing over short distances.

3-a-Side Keep Ball : Exercise devised to place players in a situation where they must retain possession with their team while many other active obstacles are in the same area.

3 v 3 Warm Up in Box : Exercise that can focus on both the attacking and defensive side of a player's game prior to session or match.

Circle: Follow Pass Across : Exercise that incorporates passing over short distances and acceleration.

Diamond One Touch : Exercise where player's have to focus on their short, sharp passing.

Diamond Passing : Quick, short passes that force the player's to use both feet and different surfaces.

Dribbling Cross Over : Player's have to dribble across the area, avoiding other player's before completing a wall pass.

Handball : Game to get player's moving and concentrating on their attacking and defensive duties.

Jockeying Basic : Good warm up exercise for any defence orientated sessions.

Leivan Cross Over : This exercise combines short, quick passing with running with the ball.

Long Range Passing : Longer range passing between two partnerships.

One Player in Control : Player's take it turns to be the central player and the one that dictates where the ball is played.

Pass, Back Off, Pass : Exercise which works on a players passing while moving.

Pass to Spare Player : 1 touch, short passing exercise.

Sprint in Circle : Player's can sprint and stretch while the coach talks to them.

Throw, Control, Pass : Movement, communication and first time passing are all focussed upon in this exercise.

Triangle: First Time Passing : Exercise that forces player's to pass accurately with their first touch.

Triangle: 2 Touch Passing : Player's are required to take a touch before passing back. The surface used to control the ball is continually changed.
