Football Training Exercises for Any Age


These are participation based soccer coaching sessions that can be adapted and implemented for any age group. Ideal for Grassroots coaching, this is because grassroots coaching is orientated around involvement and enjoyment.

1 v 1 for Points : 1 v 1 exercise where player's must score points to win. The two gates give them a choice of end targets to aim for.
Primary Objective: Dribbling

1 v 1 to Shoot : 1 v 1 exercise where both player's have a goal to attack and defend.
Primary Objective: Dribbling      Secondary Objective: Finishing

2 Games, 1 Pitch : Places 2 matches onto one pitch to improve awareness, close control and playing under pressure.
Primary Objective: All Attacking

2 v 1 Channel : An exercise that places partnerships of attackers into a succession of 2 v 1 situations.
Primary Objective: Support Play      Secondary Objective: Passing

2 v 1 Channel to Shoot : An exercise that places partnerships of attackers into a succession of 2 v 1 situations. With the final 2 v 1 ending with a shot at goal.
Primary Objective: All Attacking

2 x 3 v 1 Running with the Ball : An exercise based around supporting the player in possession and covering space with the ball as quickly as possible.

2 Way Shooting : A shooting exercise that allows teams to shoot from either side of the goal.
Primary Objective: Finishing

3-a-side Keep Ball : An exercise where players must retain possession of their ball in an area where many other players are also playing.

3 Ball Finish : A session to introduce individuals to different attacking movements and interplay that can occur in the final third.
Primary Objective: Finishing      Secondary Objective: Passing

3 Shooting Points : A shooting exercise that encourages players to aim for the corners as more points are awarded for that area.

5 Stage Half Pitch : An exercise where players experience completing different techniques as they move from stage to stage.

Attacking Heading with a Goal : An attacking heading exercise that incorporates a goal and a goalkeeper.

Beat Partner to Cone : An exercise to introduce players to disguising their movements in order to off-balance a defender.
Primary Objective: Dribbling

Circle Session; Dribble and Pass : The most basic exercise of the 'circle series' to introduce player's to the concept and prepare them for the following ones.
Primary Objective: Close Control      Secondary Objective: Passing

Control Facing an Opponent : The ability for a player to receive the ball, and retain possession when being pressured by a defender is a crucial one. Therefore this exercise places player's in such a position so they can learn the correct techniques to cope with the situation.

Diamond Cross Over : This exercise introduces players to increasing their awareness of other players around them as they move their own ball.

Diamond Cross Over with Wall Pass : This exercise builds on Diamond Cross Over by incorporating more dribbling players and by introducing a wall pass at the end of their run.

Dictated Passing : All passes go through the middle player and they decide where the ball is played next. Passes occur over a short distance.
