Waist-to-hip Ratio Test

If a person stores and carries extra weight around the middle of their body then the chance of diabetes and heart attacks increases. The circumference of the waist should not exceed that of the hips.

For the following test a tape measure will be required.

  1. Wrap tape measure around the hips. Record the value.
  2. The wrap the tape measure around the waist, just above the navel. Record the value.
  3. Divide the recorded waist value by that of the recorded hip value. See table below for an explanation of the final figure.

> 1.10 Very Poor
1.00 – 1.10 Poor
0.91 – 0.99 Below Average
0.90 Average
0.85 – 0.89 Good
< 0.85 Excellent

If the waist-to-hip ratio is high then two things need to occur:

  • Undertake more cardio-vascular exercise
  • Alter the diet to reduce fat intake and make it more balance
