Acceleration

What is it testing?

An individual’s acceleration, which is the time it takes to go from a stationary position to full speed.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Good acceleration is required in football as it is not often a player will be required to move at full speed for longer than 30 metres. In fact the majority of movement will be starting, stopping and turning, where no more than 15 metres is completed each time before a change to the movement.

Required Facilities / Equipment / Personnel

  • Flat ground
  • Cones / Markers
  • A timer

Process

  1. The individual undertaking the test begins behind the first line, while the timing individual begins at the finish line 30 metres away.
  2. On the timers signal the individual must attempt to cover the distance between them as quickly as possible.
  3. The timer is stopped once the individual crosses the final line, so they should not slow down until they have crossed the line.
  4. Record the time it took for the individual to complete the run.
  5. Complete the test 2 more times, ensuring an adequate rest is allowed between each one.
