Support Play
- Movement to Create Space - Remain as far into the corners as possible.
- Body Shape - Ideally half turn with back to nearest touchline so that they can see as much of the pitch as possible. This is allow them to see their teammates, the defenders, the ball and where space exisits.
- Supporting Position - Team mates have to get in the correct supporting positions the angle (so that an unobstructed passing channel exists between the 2 players), distance (realisitc to position on pitch, defenders and the ball carrier's ability) and timing (not too early - easier to mark or not too late) of the support are all crucial. Players should also be aware when to support infront and long (when the player in possession has time to look and actually play forward) and when they must come short or support from behind (when the ball carrier is under pressure or has a body shape that prevents playing forward).
- Communication - Clear, concise and early information and instructions.
Passing
- Approach - The player should approach the ball from an angle
- Non-Kicking Foot - This foot should be placed next to the ball. It is a rule of thumb that if the ball is sliced away from from the passer there their non-kicking foot is too far from the ball. If it is sliced inwards then the foot is too close.
- Correct Body Shape - Foot turned, not the whole body. Strike through the middle of the ball and ensure that the head is steady and they are not leaning back.
- Execution - Ensure they apply the correct technique for the desired pass, although 9 times out of 10 in this exercise the pass will be the basic push pass. The pass should be the correct weight, accurate and at the appropriate height and time.
