HOMOPHOBIA
The area of sexuality in football is one that is often ignored deliberately or brushed aside. Some people find the area too embarrassing to discuss, yet they would be very surprised to learn that their children are often more informed through their school’s PSHE curriculum. (Personal and Social Health Education). Displaying discrimination towards a persons sexuality is often considered to be ‘fair game’ but few people realise that this form of discrimination is as damaging as other more publicised forms.
As with gender discrimination, discrimination on the basis of someone being gay, lesbian or bisexual can take many forms. Verbal and sexual harassment and abuse, bias in selection, (if not excluded entirely), put-downs through jokes, pictures, assumptions, and innuendo are all experienced by people in football. As stated it is critical that no one in football is unfairly discriminated against and it is vital that all individuals respect and appreciate each other for what they can offer to sport, regardless of their sexual orientation. Homophobia is unacceptable and must be challenged in the sporting environment.
